The City of Berkeley, MO is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Fire Captain. Applications must be post marked by November 29, 2024.

SUMMARY

A Fire Captain directs the activities of Fire personnel during an assigned shift. An employee in this class supervises a number of personnel and has responsibility for their safety. Duties include: assigning, directing, and supervising firefighting, medical emergencies, and related life and property protection; directing the route to be taken to emergency calls; implementing and/or integrating into an incident management system; making decisions regarding firefighting methods to be used; deploying and managing personnel; ensuring the safe operation of fire equipment and apparatus; and assisting Fire Community Services with, and participating in, public education, community relations, and fire prevention programs and activities. This position is also responsible for performing other related duties as assigned or required.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the daily operations of the fire station, which includes staff, and equipment maintenance and inspection.
  • Responds to fire alarms by leading and coordinating the actions of assigned firefighters.
  • Actively participates in extinguishing fires and performing lifesaving duties.
  • Conducts and participates in training on the use of fire trucks and related equipment.
  • Trains staff in methods of inspecting buildings for fire hazards.
  • Conducts training on firefighting techniques and methods.
  • Trains staff in first aid and resuscitation.
  • Schedules and leads events to educate public on fire prevention principles and techniques.
  • Prepares and submits required reports to fire chief.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge of firefighting methods and strategies.
  • Excellent leadership abilities and the ability to direct subordinates in emergency situations.
  • Ability to make quick decisions under pressure.
  • Excellent managerial and supervisory skills.
  • Considerable knowledge of modern firefighting and rescue principles, practices and methods including the operations and maintenance of the various types of apparatus and equipment used in fire-fighting activities.
  • Organizes and oversees the schedules and job performance of fire station staff.
  • Conducts performance evaluations that are timely and constructive.
  • Handles discipline of employees as needed and in accordance with company policy.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate degree in Fire Science or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of five years of experience as a firefighter.

State Firefighter I & II and Certification from St. Louis County Fire Standards Commission.

QUALIFICATIONS

Must have the following certifications: State of Missouri Fire Officer l

State of Missouri Fire Instructor l

State of Missouri Incident Safety Officer

CPR Instructor and Car seat Technician

A Captain must maintain the above certifications or higher as long as employed in this position.

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to pass a physical examination and perform physical functions of a firefighter’s duties.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds at a time.
