Crime Free Housing Coordinator: Detective Ronnell Johnson
The Crime Free Housing Program is a program designed to reduce crime, drugs, and gang activity on rental properties. Police officers work hand in hand with property managers to ensure a safer rental housing community for their tenants. This is accomplished by police working along with the property managers to strictly enforcing the leases that the residents of their communities have signed.
There are many advantages of the Crime Free Program. They include:
- Improved property value
- Improved personal safety for tenants
- Stable, more satisfied tenants, resulting in an increased demand for rental property
- Lower maintenance and repair cost
- More time spent on routine management and less on crisis control
- Posted signage indicating “Crime Free” on property
Managers work with the police to become educated about crime prevention and creating a safe environment by passing three phases of the crime free housing program.
Phase 1: Managers and employees rental properties attend a free eight-hour Crime Free Housing course conducted by the Berkeley Police Department. The topics of this course include: strengthening the lease addendum, and properly applying crime free principles and its application; how to conduct background checks on future residents; the eviction process, and how to build a safer more enjoyable rental property.
Phase 2: The Berkeley Police Department will conduct a safety survey to ensure that the required crime free principles are being applied properly on the properties.
Phase 3: Property managers and owners conduct a safety program to educate residents on safety and creating a stronger relationship with the Berkeley Police.
