More Information
Patrol Division
The Patrol Division is the largest division in the police department. Officers patrol the City of Berkeley 24-hours-a-day, seven days a week, responding to most calls for service. The police department responds to approximately 22,500 calls for service annually. Officers are divided into two 12-hour shifts. Individual shifts are managed by watch commanders, and two supervisors who are sergeants.
The City of Berkeley is divided into four areas called sectors. The watch commander will assign officers to each sector. When officers are assigned to particular areas of the city, it provides blanket coverage and enhances quicker response times. It also allows officers to quickly respond to other areas as needed. The patrol division prides itself on providing a quick response and serving the community.
Every officer assigned to the Patrol s Division utilizes a marked police car. This higher the visibility of police presence in the community helps make it less likely criminal activity will occur.
The Berkeley Police Department has obtained a grant from the Department of Justice for Body Worn Cameras (BWC).
The BWCs will be used by the Patrol Division to record interactions with the public.
Our BWCs are now in full use as of Friday, October 07, 2022.
